Paycheck Calculator

Your salary and your paycheck are two different numbers, and the gap is what this calculator estimates. From a gross amount, it subtracts federal income tax at the standard single-filer brackets, Social Security and Medicare, a state rate you provide, and any pre-tax deduction such as a retirement contribution, then shows what actually reaches your bank account.

The largest piece is federal income tax, which is progressive: each band of income is taxed at that band's rate, not the whole salary at the top rate. Because the standard deduction is applied first, the effective rate is always lower than the marginal rate. Someone in the 22% bracket does not pay 22% of their income; their effective federal rate is usually closer to 10% or 12%.

FICA is simpler and unavoidable. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to an annual cap, and Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus an additional 0.9% above a high threshold. Unlike income tax, these are flat for most earners, which is why they are the deduction people notice most on a moderate salary.

The state figure is an input because the range is enormous: from no income tax at all to more than 10%. This calculator applies your rate as a flat percentage of gross, which is a fair approximation but not exact, since states have their own brackets and deductions. Withholding also does not perfectly match your final liability, so a refund or a bill at tax time is normal. Use the result for budgeting, not for filing.

How the math works

  • Federal taxable income = gross − the standard deduction (single filers, as of 2025).
  • Federal tax = the sum of each bracket's rate applied to the income falling inside that bracket.
  • FICA = 6.2% of gross up to the Social Security wage base, plus 1.45% of all gross wages.
  • Net pay = gross − federal tax − FICA − state tax (gross × state rate) − pre-tax deductions.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my take-home pay less than my salary?
Employers withhold federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, state income tax where applicable, and any benefits you elected such as health insurance or a retirement contribution. What remains after those deductions is your net pay.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate applies to your last dollar of income, while the effective rate is your total tax divided by total income. Because brackets are progressive, the effective rate is always lower — someone in the 22% bracket often has an effective federal rate near 10% to 12%.
How much is FICA?
Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to an annual cap, and Medicare is 1.45% with no cap. High earners pay an extra 0.9% Medicare surtax above the threshold. Together they are 7.65% for most workers.
Is this the same as what my employer withholds?
Not exactly. Employers withhold based on the W-4 you filed, which may include credits, dependents, or additional withholding you requested, and some states use their own brackets. This estimate is closest to your true liability for a simple single or joint filer taking the standard deduction.
Do pre-tax deductions reduce my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions, HSA contributions and some insurance premiums are taken before income tax, which lowers your taxable income and therefore your tax. Roth contributions are made after tax and do not reduce it now.
Why did my refund differ from this estimate?
Because withholding is an estimate too. Bonuses, second jobs, investment income, credits, and mid-year changes all shift the final figure. A refund simply means too much was withheld during the year, not that you paid less tax overall.
